Hedge Fund Strategies

Becoming involved in hedge fund trading is a massive investment and understanding investor strategy on a high level is necessary before even thinking about becoming involved. Chances are, if you have the kind of capital required to invest in a hedge fund, you already have a solid understanding of investing. However, you'll need to adjust your tactics when considering hedge fund strategies.

It's important to understand that the Securities and Exchange Commission does not regulate hedge funds. The policy changes from dealing with stocks or mutual funds to hedge funds can be jarring when you're unprepared. Hedge funds are generally reserved for investing by recognized institutions or very wealthy individuals.

In addition, hedge fund strategies can be heavily reliant on leverage. While this increases the potential for big profits, it can also lead to financial disaster if the investor isn't careful. Another thing that sets hedge funds apart is that fees associated with them are not SEC regulated. Hedge funds can charge astronomically high percentage fees, taking a big bite out of one's profits.

Understanding Investor Strategy: Basic Tactics

With a basic understanding of hedge fund mechanics, let's work on understanding investor strategy. There are a lot of different paths a hedge fund can take. The most volatile tactic is simply investing in equities that expect to have high levels of growth. Needless to say, this plan can have high returns, but can be very unpredictable.

A more predictable plan is buying equities or debts from companies at a high level of discount. Companies facing debt will often trade very low. When they can be pushed back into the green the return on these investments can be very significant.

Some hedge fund tactics have literally been perfected to a science. These funds are controlled primarily by a computer algorithm with minimal human interference or interaction. These programs take into account trends to try and predict the plan with the best returns. They lack intuition, but have ability to calculate risk and reward from potential investments.
